Plenty of people all over the world know this melody by heart. Fewer however realize that it came originally from Ukraine, and is still among the most traditional Christmas carols in the country. The beautiful choral arrangement was done by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, and English lyrics were later added by by an American composer Peter J. Wilhousky.
